COBENEFITS at COP25

Co-Ben­e­fits and Just Tran­si­tion Pan­el at the EU Pavilion

Dur­ing the first week of the COP25 in Madrid, the COBENEFITS team co-organ­ised and par­tic­i­pat­ed in diverse dis­cus­sions and pan­els. How can co-ben­e­fits be active­ly mobi­lized for ambi­tious and ear­ly action? How can just tran­si­tion mea­sures be effec­tive­ly includ­ed into NDCs? Through dis­cus­sion with local prac­ti­tion­ers, diverse NGO rep­re­sen­ta­tives and COP25 atten­dants, the mile­stones for more ambi­tious cli­mate action were defined as the sci­en­tif­ic local research on the social and eco­nom­ic oppor­tu­ni­ties of cli­mate action and the effec­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion of these co-ben­e­fits. COP25: Federal Minister for the Environment Svenja Schulze on COBENEFITS

In addi­tion to cli­mate pro­tec­tion, there are many oth­er good argu­ments for opt­ing against coal and for renew­able ener­gies: That’s what Sven­ja Schulze, Fed­er­al Min­is­ter for the Envi­ron­ment, Nature Con­ser­va­tion and Nuclear Safe­ty, point­ed out in a press brief­ing on Just Tran­si­tion at COP25 in Madrid on Decem­ber 12, 2019. Sven­ja Schulze and her team, includ­ing Karsten Sach, Direc­tor Inter­na­tion­al and Euro­pean Pol­i­cy at BMU, high­light­ed the remark­able social and eco­nom­ic oppor­tu­ni­ties of decar­boniz­ing the pow­er sec­tor and referred to assess­ment results of the COBENEFITS project in South Africa.

Successful trainings in South Africa

Our suc­cess­ful series of face-to-face train­ings on the co-ben­e­fits of renew­able ener­gy in South Africa has come to an end. We’re hap­py to have seen strong inter­est by all par­tic­i­pants and engage­ment by mul­ti­ple impor­tant stake­hold­ers, among them the Depart­ment of Ener­gy, Depart­ment of Envi­ron­ment Mpumalan­ga and the South African Nation­al Ener­gy Devel­op­ment Insti­tute (SANEDI). In the frame­work of the COBENEFITS project, RENAC realis­es a num­ber of online and face-to-face train­ings in the part­ner coun­tries. Start­ing in August 2019, the next train­ings will focus on sus­tain­able and inte­grat­ed pow­er sys­tem plan­ning for the respec­tive part­ner coun­tries and will allow par­tic­i­pants to get an in-depth view into co-ben­e­fits analy­sis and method­olo­gies.
